About diabetes. What is diabetes.
By diebetes, the body has reduced ability to take gycose out of the blood, to convert glycose to other substances like glycogen and fat, and to store these in the liver, in the muscles and in the adipose tissue (fat tissue). Therefore the blood sugar level tend to be too high og swinging between low and very high.
The hormone insuline, produced by the pancreas gland, stimulate the process where glycose is taken out of the blood, converted to glycogen and other substances, and stored. Most kinds of diabetes involve some deffect in the secretion of insulin or the way the body react to insulin.
Diiabetes is divided in several types of which the most imortant are diabetes mellitus type 2 and diabetes mellitus type 2. (Or mellitus type I and diabetes mellitus type II)
What is diabgetes mellitus type I
By this kind of diabetes, the pancreas gland do not secrete enough insulin or not at all. Therefore den conversion and storage of glycose is not stimulated and does not occur effectively enough. This kind of disease ocure without any very distinct cause, and can occur at any age. Infection in the pancreas or auto.immune responces against the pancreatic tissue may be causing factors.
What is diabetes mellitus type II
By type II diabetes, the body does not react upon stimulation by insuline, but the insulin level is normal or even abnormally high, The abnormally high level that may occur, is an attempt from the regulatory mechanisms in the body to stimulate the conversion and storage of glycose. Diabetes mellitus type II can be caused by an overconsume of sugar and fat for years, and by obesity. Traditionally this was a geriatric disease, but nowadays even teenagers get the disease because of regular overconsume of sugar and fat.
Symptoms of diabetes mellitus type 1
The disease have a sudden start. Often children or young people are attacked by the disease. The main symptoms are.
- Increased urine production
-Dehydration (lack of water in the body)
-Abnormally high thirst as a consequence of increased urine production
- Dryness in the mouth
- An abnormal high appetite
- Feeling extremely tired and weak
- Weight loss, even when one eats well
- Impaired vision
Symptoms of diabetes mellitus type 2
Diabetes type 2 is the most common kind of diabetes. The main The symptoms are:

- Dry mouth
- Cuts or sores that heal slowly
- Itching in the skin

- Impaired vision
Treatment of diabetes mellitus type I
The treatment of this type of diabetes is external supply of insuline by means of a hypodermal syringe combined with a diet where the intake of sugar and fat is well regulated.
Traditionally one used insuline from pigs to treat diabetes. Nowadays one uses most synthetic insuline which is working better in most cases.
Treatment of diabetes mellitus type II
The most usual treatment of this kind of diabetes, is a diet with a very moderate and well controlled intake of sugar and fat.
Additionally medicines to bring down the blood glycose levels are also used. Insuline treatment is also used. There are different traditions and also different fashion swings regarding how much doctors relate on diet, medical treatment and insuline supply.
By diabetes type 2 it is often possible for patients to try out a more rigorous diet without medical treatment and less demaqnding diet, but with the aid of medicines to bring down the blood sugar level and insuline.
There seems to be a movement towards greater use of insuline than before for the treatment of diabetes type 2.

Generally a diet to treat diabetes type 2 has a high protein content and an energy intake not exceeding the daily need.
The energy intake should be provided with a combination of fat and carbohydrates with a low glycemic index, that is carbohydrates that are taken up slowly in the intestines. Such carbohydrates are found in full corn bread, full corn cereals, peas and beens. Carbohydrates in sweet fruit are taken up faster, but sweet fruit can be consumed to some extend. Added sugar should be avoided in the diet.
The fat intake should be from a combination of natural omega-3, omaga-6 and mono-unsaturated fat types. Omega-6-fat is found in soy oil, corn oil, peanut oil and in most nuts and sunflower seeds. Omega-3-fat is found in fish, seafood and flax oil. Mono-unsaturate fat is found in olive oil, canola oil, rape oil and almonds.
About measurements of blood sugar levels and other parameters indicating the status of a diabetic ailment

HbA1c can be measured by the medical laboratories and it is relatively common also to measure it in doctor's offices.
Fruktosamin is a compound based on glucose molecules and provides an indication of blood glucose level over the past few weeks.
Mikroalbumin is a proteine substance that often is excreted in the urine when there is incipient renal damage due to diabetes. This should be measured in diabetic patients to detect such early damage due to bad to blood glucose control, so that it can be done better and thereby prevent worse kidney damage.
