What determines the maximal effect of a car motor
Basicly the maximum effect of a motor is determined by by how much fuel it can burn in each time unit, and its ability to convert the heat produced into energy of motion.
The air and fuel deliverance capacity
The capasity of the apparatus delivering the air and fuel to the motor, will therefore determine the maximum effect a motor can deliver.There are several methods of increasing this capasity:
* The thicker the air and fuel lines to the motor are, the more freely the air and fuel will flow into the motor.
* By having many walves in the motor cylinders, the air or fuel-air mixture will flow freely into the cylinders and distribute itself evenly in the whole volume of the cylinders in a short time.
* A turbo-charger or compressor can press the air faster into the cylinders by producing a over-pressure.
* By using a cooling device, inter-cooler, between the turbo-charger and the cylinders, the air will be cooled down and get more compact. This will also increase the capasity of air deliverance to the cylinders.
* One can use a cool air intake. By taking the air in from the outside at a cool site instead of inside the notor house will secure deliverance of cooler and more compact air with more oxygen at each volume unit and give the motor more efrect.
The capacity of the motor to process fuel and air
The ability of the motor to take inn and process the air and fuel it is offered, will also determine its maximal effect. This capasity depend on several factors:
* The capasity of the motor to take inn air and fuel will be proportional to the volume of each cylinder, and to the number of cylinders.
* The capasity of taking inn air and fuel will also be propotional to the number of piston strokes and thereby the number of rounds of the crankshaft in each time unit. To achieve the wanted numbr of piston strokes, he gearbox must be set up in such a way that the speed of the wheels gives the desired numbr of piston strokes in the cylinders of the motor.
But the fuel and air brought in must be brought to react as completely as possible. By bringing in the exact amout of air necessary to burn totally all fuel brought in, this should theoretically be possible, but practically one must bring in more air than fuel so that each fuel molecule has the chance to get in touch with air molecules the necesary number of times.
Furthermore must the injection mechanisms be constructed so that fuel and air gets equally distributed to all parts of the available volum in the cylinder and as rapidly as possible.
Properties of cooling mechanisms necessary for large processment of fuel and air
The processment of much fuel in each tine unit does not only produce heat that can be converted to mechanical work, but also much waist heat that must be brought away so that the temperature is held within a suitable range, so that the motor is not damages, and so that the heat does not make the volume inside the cylinder to shrink or widen by heat and thereby hinder movement. The cooling mechanisms must therefore have a great capcity.
This can be achieved by cooling mechanisms with wide volumes, with rapid low of cooling fluid or air, with a radiator of high capacity and effective cooling fan and cooling pump.
The effectiveness in the motor to convert heat from the burning of fuel to mechanical action
The heat produced must be converted to motion, for the motor to be effetive. This convertion effectiveness depend on these factors:
* The difference between the volume of the fuel and air mixture when ignited and its volume when the piston is on the bottom is a main factor determining the convertion from heat to energy of motion.
* The less friction there is inside the motor, the more effctive this convertion also will be. Friction can be reduced by good lubrication inside the motor.
Friction can also be reduced by having cylinders and pistons with large circumference and short height instead or short circumference and long height. Then the cylinders need not have to travel long for each stroke, which means that it can move slower and that gives less friction.
