About the digestive system and digestion
Generally about the digestive system
The digestive system includes intestinal organs, six glandular organs and cells inn the inner linings of channals with gland-like function (gland cells or cell glands).
The hollow or intestinal parts of the system are these in the successive order of the digestive process: The oral cavity (Cavum oris), throat (Farynxs), esophagus (Oesofagus), stomach (stomach ventricle), the small intestine (with the sextions duodenum, jejunum and ileum), large intestine (colon) and rectum (rectum ).

In the oral cavity the food is crchewed to

The esophagus traansports the food down to the
stomach ventricle. The inner lining sof the esophagus is secreting slime that

The stomach ventricle (stomach, gastric ventricle)
The stomach is a sac-like structure with thick
muscular walls. It is shaped like a strongly curved, slightly flat pear and sits
at the terminal end of the esophagus. The human stomach has a volume of ca.
50-150 ml when it is empty, but it expands to approx. 1-1.5 liters when you have
eaten.
At the entrance of the stomach ventricle there
is a ring muscle that hinders food from going up again and at the outlet there
is another ring muscle that keeps the content inside until the ventricle has done its work.
The stomach crushes and blends the food even
more by its myscular movements.
In the mucosa of the stomach there are glandular structures (gastric
glands) that secrete gastric juice consisting of hydrocloric acid, enzymes
(Pepsin ), mucus and water.
The acidic stomach neutralizes the alkaline
saliva, which was added to the food in the mouth and brings the content to an
acidic pH level of 1.3.
The acid break down the carbohyrdates even
further so that even more of it is transfered to single sugar molecules.
The enzyme Pepsin begins to split proteins to
smaller units (peptides) and even amino acids.The stomach usually hold the food in
3-4 hours, before the now-thin porridge (mixture) is gradually being added to
the inlet of the small intestine (duodenal).
The initial part of the small
intestine - the duodenum, the liver and the pancreas
The small intestine is divided into the sections duodenom, jejunum and ileum.
When the by now-thin liquid nutrient mixture leaves the stomach it first enters the duodenum. Here secrets from the pancreas is blended into the intestinal content. This happens when the duodenum sends out signal substances (hormones) to the pancreas, which then emptiedsits products into the duodenum.
The pancreatic secrets conatains bicarbonate that neutralizes the acidic mixture from the stomach.
The pancreatic secret contains the enzymes trypsine and chymotrypsin that cleave peptids and proteins further down to aminio acids.
The secrete contains amylase that cleaves carbohydrates (polysaccarides and disaccarids) further down to sigle sugar molecules (monosacharids).
The secrets further contains enzymes called lipases that cleave fat molecules to single fatty acids and the alcohol glycerol.
At the same point in the duodenum bile is also added via the bile duct from the gall bladder. The liver makes the bile and transfers it for storage in the gall bladder. There the bile is concentrated and transferred to the duodenum as needed. Also this happens when the duoenum sends out a signal substance, cholesystokinin, to the gall bladder.
The gall helps to divide the fat into small drops by an enulgation process. This is necessary so that the enzymes can get to the fat molecules. The emulgation is effected by soap-like substances, so-called bile salts.
The rest of the small intestine (small bowel) - the jejunum and ileum
From the duodenum the intestinal content is transported trough the other sections of the small intestine, the jejunum and ileum. Jejunum is about. 2,5-4 meters and follows directly after the 25-30 cm long duodenum. Ileum accounts for approx. 1,5-2 meters of small intestine and follows jejunum.
In these sections the brakdown begun in the duodenum continues.
At the same time the simple nutrients resultant from the breakdown are absorbed through the wall into a tight meshwork of thin blood vessels in the walls. The walls of the small intestine is heavily folded so thet the surface for absorbtion gets as great as possible.
The movement of the content through the small intestine occurs successively both forewards and backwards, so that the content is blended even further. The movements are howver most foreward and eventually the content is emptied into the large bowel, or the colon.
The large intestine (large bowel) - colon
The colon consists of four parts: the colon ascendens (the first part, the ascending colon), colon transversum (the second part, the transverse colon), colon descendens (third part, the declining large intestine) and colon sigmoideum (the last part, the S-shaped colon ). In humans the intestine is about. 1-1.5 meters.
The colon absorbs most of the fluid from the digestive tract. It also takes up salts. Because the colon is relatively quiet through much of the day, especially when you sleep, it provides for an environment fertile for bacteria. The bacteria brakes down some nutrient even further. They also produce Vitamin K which is absorbed from the intestine.
The movement of the colon is similar to the small intestine, but is much slower. The content may reside in the colon in up to 18-24 hours, but with great individual variations.
The colon empties content into the rectum 3-4 times a day. This is done by a reflex action triggered by the stimuli in the stomach when a person eats, the gastrocolic reflex. During this action a 20-30 cm long segments of the colon pushes the content over to the rectum.
Also stimuli in the duodenum results in reflexes down to the colon that trigger movement of the content forewards.
The rectum
Rectum (rectum) is about 10-15 cm long and the
lower part is an extended structure called the rectal ampulle. Th erectum stores
the content emptied from the colon, the stool, until it is practical to empty it
out.
The rectum bends below the tail bone before it goes into the tighter anal canal
(canalis analis), which generally is about. 4 cm long. The anal canal has two
powerful muscles close the rectum. The inner muscle is of the same type as the
circular layers of smooth muscles in the digestive tract. The outer anal ring
muscle is a voluntary cross-striped muscle that closes the outlet to the outside,
the anus.
Some more about the liver
The liver produces the bile salts that are used in the small intestines to divide the fat in the content into very small drops.
The liver also processes the nutrients further after they have left the intestines. Generally it trandferes nutrient types that there is too much of to other types that there is to little of in the blood.
The blood from the intestines is leaded through the portal vain into the liver. Once inside the liver the nutrients are processed in many ways.
Glucose (sugar) is converted to glucogen, a sort of strarch and stored inside the liver. When there is sudden need for more energy, the liver cleaves the glucogen to sugar aging and releases it into the blood stream.
The liver can convert carbohydrates to fat. It can make glucose from amino acids. It can couple amino acids together again to form new proteins or peptides of various kind. It can convert vitamins from an inactive form to an active one. The liver also cleans the blood for alohol and abolizes it to make energy.
Whet the liver does with the nutrients depend upon what it is too much of or what is needed in greater amounts.
