ABOUT ABOUT COFFEE AND HEALTH EFFECTS OF COFFEE
The effects on caffein, coffee and
tea upon the health - also some words about coffee qualities and the coffee
production process
Coffee and tea have both
positive and negative effects upon the health. Steadily more evidence is
accumulating that coffee consume, at least when moderate, have more positive
health effects that negative. Most people probably will gain from drinking 2-6
cups of coffee a day. The right amout will however vary from person to person,
depending upon the effects one wants, and depending upon susceptibility for some
negative effects of coffee. There seems to be less scientific results published
regarding tea, and the degree of beneficial or harmfull effects form tea upon
the health is at the moment less certain that for coffee. Here are a survay of
the most important effects of caffeine and of coffee.
Generally about the coffee plant
The coffee plants are several species in the genus coffea. The most videly grown is Coffea arabica. This species has been grown in the Arabic peninsula for at least 1000 years. Coffea arabica is said to give coffe of the best quality, but is not the species with the highest content of caffein.Another widely grown species is Coffea canephora.
Kingdom: Plantae - (unranked): Angiosperms - (unranked): Eudicots - (unranked): Asterids - Order: Gentianales - Family: Rubiaceae- Genus: Coffea
Coffee plant (Coffea arabica usually) is a shrub or a tree whose fruits give us coffee.
The tree is evergreen It has thin, shiny dark green leaves that sit in pairs. The bark is gray-green and the wood is hard with a creamy color. The tree can be more than 10 m high if it is growing freely, but in plantations are the often trimmed to a height of about 2.4 m.
The plant, as such, can be nearly 60 years old and has a deep root system. It grows about. 50 cm per year and flowers only when it is three to four years old. Coffee plants thrive best in temperatures around 25 degrees C (min / max 16-28 degrees C if it is to flourish) and in good light without exposed directly to sunlight. The tree needs steady moisture, and must not dry out, and thrives in moist air without too much lime in the soil.
Generally about caffeine
Caffeine is a stimulant drug such as found in coffee, tea, soft drinks and chocolate. Caffeine is also available in tablet form. The main source of caffeine are coffee beans, but the substance is also found also in other plants such as tea plants, guarana and Yerba maté. Coffeea Arabica coffee beans contain ca. 12 mg of caffeine per. gram.
Caffeine has the empiric formula (C8H10 N4O2). It is an alcaloic with a double ring structure in the molecule.
When caffeine consumed through drinking, for example, coffee is the concentration of caffeine in the blood at their highest for between 15 minutes and two hours. Lethal dose of caffeine is around 3 to 20 g caffeine, depending on tolerance. Anxiety-like symptoms can also occur with allergies / hypersensitivity to the drug.
The half-life of caffeine is about four hours but can vary widely from person to person. Caffeine gives tolerance already after few days of continuous use. Abrupt end of caffeine intake can cause withdrawal in the form of headaches, anxiety, fatigue and a feeling of decreased energy, increased irritability and flu-like symptoms. Withdrawal starts after 12 to 24 hours and can last up to a week, but usually disappear within three days. After lengthy use of caffeine withdrawal problems can be significant. Pure caffeine is odorless, white mass with a bitter taste.
Basic pharmacological effects of caffeine
There are many variants of the compound caffein, and these chemical compounds can be found naturally in many plants, both in the leaves and fruits. The best known variant is just called caffeine, and is found in leaves and beans of the coffee plant. Other variants are theine found in tea, guaranine found in guarana and mateine found in yerba mate. Nearby related compound chemically and in bodily effects are theophylline and theopromine also found in tea.
One of the most basic effects of caffeine is to block adenosine-receptors found in many tissues. Adenocine is a local tissue hormone that signals to blood vessels to relaxe. When the receptors of adenocine are hindered, blood vessels will constrict in higher degree.
Caffeine stimulates the central nervous system, and thereby have a general stimulating effect on meny mental and physical functions.
It also stimulates release of adrenaline. Adrenaline will in turn stimulate physical reactions in the body that supports external actions.
Coffee, tea and other herbs containing coffeine have a lot of specific short term and long term effects on the body and health. Some of these effects are directly due to pharmacological efffects of caffeine, others are due to other compunds or to a combination of caffeine and other compounds.
Immediate
effects of coffein and therefore of tea and coffee
Increased mental allertness and wakeness: This effect is a direct consequence of the central stimulating effect.
The effexts on caffeine upon fat and sugar burning: Caffeine increases the basic sugar burning in the brain and the nervous tissue. Recent studies have shown that caffeine and tea can increase the total basic burning of fat in the body. An increase of around 12% of the basic heat producing fat burning seems to be realistic. Caffeine can also stimulate a person to a higher external activity level that burns more fat.
Caffeine slightly increases blood pressure and heart rate: These effects are cause by an increased secretion of adrenaline form the adrenal glands, stimulated by caffeine. These effects can be beneficial for people with a too low blood pressure. The effects are too small to cause any serious blood pressure increase on most individuals, but can contribute to a worsening of an allready high blood pressure.
Coffeine seems to slightly reduce blood flow to the heart during exercise: Coffee does not impair the blood flow in the heart muscle during rest, but seems to do it to some extend during exercise. The effect is too little to be dangerous for healthy individuals. However, it may not be wise for persons having heart problems to drink coffee before excercise.
Caffeine increases blood flow to muscles and nervous tissue: Caffeine increases the blood flow to organs neccessary for immediate external action, for example the brain and muscular tissue. According to some measurements made, it seems however that the heart does not get this effect.
Caffeine decreases blood flow to some internal organs: Caffeine decreases the blood flow to tissues not used in immediate external action, for example the digestive system.
Increased secretion of gastric acid: These effects is also due to the increased level of adrenaline caused by caffeine. This can be a beneficial effect that aid the digestion if one has too low secretion of gastric acids, but can cause pain and increase the chance for gastric ulcers for people having an allready high gastric acid secretion.
Increased secretion of urine: Caffeine causes dilation of blood vessels in the kidney, and thereby causes increased blood flow in the kidneys and increased urine production.
Coffeine stimulates bowel movement: Coffeine stimulate colon and rectum to empty its content, and thereby help against constipation.
Too much cofee and tea may cause stomach engorgement, irritated colon and flatulence: Too much coffee and tea can disturbe the colon function and honder the absorbance of gas in the colon. The symptom of these disturbances are engorged stomach, frequent bowel movement and flatulence.
Caffeine slightly inhibit digestive functions: Even though caffeine can stimulate the movement of the colon, large doses of caffeine can inhibit other digestive functions, and thereby cause symptoms like bloating and overfilled digestive sytem. This is partly also due to the increased level of adrenaline.caused by caffeine. Digestive functions are not immediately important for external actions.
Sexual stimulation: Coffee stimulate the central bervous system and it also increases the blood in pefiferial vessels. These basic properties imply that the sexual dirve and the sexual functions also will be strengthened after consume of some coffee.
Learning and memory stimulation and hinderance: Caffeine seems to have a paradoxical effect on learning and memory. When a person is actively thinking about something, caffeine seems to stimulate learning and memorance about this subject. However, learning and memorance about stuff not in the thinking process of the person, seem to be inhibited by caffeine.
Pregnant women are adviced not toc vonsume too much coffeine: A standard advice for pregnant woman is not to consume more coffeine than that equivalent to three regular cups of coffee daily, that is 300 mg caffein daily. This advice is more from a concideration of all the effects of coffein than from any specific effect.
Long term effects of coffee, tea and caffeine
Antioxydant effects of coffee and tea: Coffee and tea have strong anti-oxydant effects, and thereby protects the body tissues against damage from free radicals, and this effects help to reduce the chance of getting more specific diseases. The anti-oxydative effects also helps to reduce the amount of aging symptoms as the years pass by. This effect are probably due to a lot of compound found in coffee and tea, and and not due to the effect of caffeine.
Antiinflammatory effects of coffee: Coffee seems to reduce inflammation, and this effect again reduces the chance of getting more specific diseases.
Caffeine reduces the chance for men of getting Parkinson's disease: The protection against Parkinson's disease is confirmed for men, but not surely confirmed for women.
Coffee does not cause coronary heart disease and may even help prevent heart disease: Statistical studies indicate that coffee consume, and even high consume does nor increase the risk of coronary heart disease (CHD). Some studies has indicated that coffe even may lower the risk of coronary heart disease, but this last conclution is uncertain. 1 to 2 cups a day seem to be best to reduce the heart disease risk.
Heavy coffee and tea consumption seem to impair heart function by individual with low caffeine metabolism: Some persons have a genetically determined low metabolism of caffeine, and for those eindividuals, a consumption of more that 2 cups of coffee a day can cause heart disturbances. Less that 2 cups a day is not harmful.
Coffee reduces ther risk for non-smoking women of getting stroke: Smokers do not have this preventive effect. The effect is the same for decoffeinated coffee.
Coffee help to cure stiff and aching muscles: Muscles that are stiff and aching after struggles or exercises get better if one consumes some coffee. This may be due to the ability of coffeine to increase the blood circulation in muscles.
Coffee prevents diabetes type 2: Studies indicate a preventeing effect on diabetes type 2 from coffee, and a high consume seems better that a low consume. Over 6 cups a day seem to reduce the risk of diabetes type 2 with 35%.
High consume of Coffee may worsen an allready present diabetes type 2: Even though a high coffee consume can prevent diabetes type 2, drinking much coffee may worsen a diabetes type 2 allready present. High concentration of caffeine seems to inhibit the action of insuline in the body and thereby increase the blood level of glucose.
Coffee reduces the risk for alchohol-related chirrosis and liver cancer: Drinking of alcohol increases the risk of chirrosis and liver cancer, but coffee consume seem to counteract this risk to some degree. This does not imply that coffee drinking takes away the negative effects of heavy alcohol consume in any great degree.
Coffee reduces the chance of getting gallstones: 2-3 cups a day seem to reduce the risk of gallstones by 40%.
Coffee reduces the risk of getting asthma: Three or more cups a day significantly reduces the risk of getting asthma.
Coffee seems to reduce the risk of cancer: Studies indicate that coffee reduces the risk of cancer, and especially colon cancer and prostate cancer.
Caffeine and coffee improves memory by elderly people: Especially long term memory is improved.
Coffee does not cause osteoporosis: Newer studies indicate that coffee does not cause osteoporosis as previously thought.
Green tea reduces significantly the risk of getting heart disease, stroke and other vascular diseases: The reduction seems to be greatest for women.
Green tea have uncerain effect on cancer risk: Laboratory studies have indicated a reduction of processes leading to cancer from consume of green tea, but this risk-lowering has not been reported by epidemological studies.
Different types and classes of coffee
There are many basic types of coffee with very different aromas and tastes. These different types give a very different experience when you drink them, and when uou smell their scent. The quality and fineness also very considerably, as with wine. Some of the finest coffees give such a great experience when you drink it, that it can be compared to drinking a quality wine of a good vintage. Therefore the prizes of the different cofees very much from the plain types to the real great variants. However, it is not necessary to drink very much of the finest sorts to get a great experience because of the content of taste and aroma.
The tastes and aromas of different coffee types depend upon the race of cofee bush used, the character of the soil and climate on the place of growth, and the way of handling the coffee after beeing harvested. Therefore the different cofee sorts often takes names from the place where they are grown. Puerto Rico, Kenya, Malabar, Camerun, Guatemale, Mexico, Java Mocha and so on.
The coffees sold in the stores can be these original sorts, or they can be a blending of different types and quality sortings, composed by the different cofee houses.
As with the original coffee types, these blendings are of varying class and quality, from a very cheap quality to something of high class. Most of the blendings in the stores are made up of modest quality sortings with a little addition of some finer types. Those cheap blendings that eveyone is familiar with, do not give any great experience, but the taste and aroma is usually fair enough for the prize you pay.
You should however occasionally buy some high class coffee, either a pure original type, or a high class blending. If you have not tasted such a coffee before, you will be greatly surprised about the experience a cup of a real high class coffee can give.
Medical Uses of Coffee and Caffeine
Caffeine either drunk as an ingredient in a bevarage, as a hebal formula or as a pharmacological p+reparation have many medical uses.
Caffeine is used to increase wakedness and allertness.
Caffeine is used in slimming products to enhance fat metabolism.
Coffee is used as an ingredients in intestinal cleansing procedures, for example as coffee enemas.
The production and preparation of coffee
Before the coffee can be used, it goes through a lot of processes. The coffee berries must be picked, then the internal seeds, called beans, must be separated from the rest of the berries. Then the beans are dried and sorted according to quality, and some sorts are also aged. The coffee beans are then heated in high temperature, (roasted or burned) before they are used in order to increase the taste and aroma, and to give the beans such a consistency that the substances in the beans easily can be extracted by warm water. By the rosting process, the beans turn dark becuase the substance sucrose caramelizes. A substance produced during the burning is the aromatic oily substance caffeol that gives the coffee much of its taste and aroma.
Then the beans are ground. The beans are ground more or less fine. Ideally coffee beans should be ground right before use, so that no aroma is lost when stored. Coffee shops selling finer coffee sorts, will store the coffee beans whole and can grind them for the customer by purchase time.
It has become steadily more common to grind the beans at home or at the workplaces in order to get the highest quality of the ready drink. To gind coffe at home there are a lot of grinding mashines to be found on the market of various prize categories. You can also get advanced mashines that do the whole process from grinding to serving the ready coffee.
The grinding vary in fineness according to how the coffee is finally brewed. The crudest grinding is for coffe to be boiled in a kettle, the coffee is ground finer for drip brewing, and the finest grinding is for making espresso.
The brewing temperature and time have a great impact upon the final product. A high temperature equal to or near 100 degees celcius (boiling water) will extract very much substances tasting acidly or harshly, something many would not prefere. A very lower temperature will extract too little of the tastes and aromas from the coffee beans. Drip brewing with a hairly high temperature will give a final product most persons find optional.
